Chelmsford - A History

Geographically, Chelmsford is in the centre of Essex. Since the 13th century it has been the county town, the seat of the Assizes and an important market. Chelmsfords' pivotal position in Essex was consolidated by the establishment of Essex County Council in 1889. In 2012 Chelmsford was granted city status.

The Romans called the place Caesaromagus. For a week in 1381 Chelmsford became the seat of Government for the whole of England to deal with the aftermath of the peasants' revolt. With the coming, first of the canal from Heybridge, and then the railways Chelmsford soon became a hub of industry and innovation. With the arrival of Marconi, Chelmsford became the birth place of radio.
