Historical Map of Colchester

Discover the landscape of the past with these fascinating historical maps. Based on the popular one-inch ordinance survey maps, the Colchester Historical map shows a time when there was no old bypass around the town, let alone the new dual carriageway A12.

Apart from Colchester town the map area covers Burnham-on-Crouch, Clacton-on-Sea, Halstead and Maldon. It was a time when a railway ran from Kelvedon through Tiptree all the way to Tollesbury to meet passenger steamers and Maldon had its own train station.

Yet a new form of transport was becoming popular and more affordable and the railways having displaced the Thames Sailing Barges now faced stiff competition themselves from motor vehicles.

Each map is printed in full colour superimposed with modern-day British National grid for ease of reference.
