Grays Thurrock - A History

by Brian Evans

Grays Thurrock - A History Thurrock is an area of South Essex full of contrasts and the gateway between Kent and Essex by tunnel, bridge and ferry.

Many strands of the tapestry of English History are associated with Thurrock, such as the inception of the Great Peasants Revolt in 1381 and Queen Elizabeth I's address at Tilbury in 1588, at the time of the Spanish Armada.

Tilbury is an ancient River Port, but in the 19th century a great chain of docks opened up, which brought a host of new industry to the area along with housing.

Despite the docks and the industry, Thurrock also has world class wildlife and nature reserves that command superb views up and down the river Thames.
